WoW Forever Addons: How They Work and How to Install Them

By Marc · Updated October 12, 2026

If you played Classic with a folder full of addons, WoW Forever needs a fresh start. Forever doesn’t run on the Classic client’s addon system but on modern World of Warcraft’s, with the addon restrictions that came with Midnight. Most Classic addons need a Forever version from their author before they work, and some kinds of addons can’t do in Forever what they did in Classic.

This guide is written during the beta; addon support is moving quickly, so always check the addon’s own page.

What’s different

  • A different addon system: Forever shares modern World of Warcraft’s interface code, so addons are written against that, not against Classic Era.
  • Midnight’s restrictions: addons get less access to combat information. Addons that track or automate combat, like many WeakAuras setups, are hit hardest.
  • Separate versions: an addon made for Forever is a separate release, recognisable by a .toc file ending in _Camelot; the beta client uses interface 16001.

Addons that only read your own character and show it in a new way, such as bag, map and interface addons, have the easiest time moving over.

Installing addons in the beta

  1. Download the addon’s Forever version (CurseForge and Wago list the game version each file supports).
  2. Unzip it into World of Warcraft/_classic_beta_/Interface/AddOns, so the addon’s own folder sits directly inside AddOns.
  3. On the character screen, open AddOns and check that it’s enabled. If it says “out of date”, tick “Load out of date AddOns” only for addons whose author says they work in Forever.

The launch client may use a different folder than the beta; check the folders Battle.net creates.

Quest and dungeon helpers

Quest addons have the most to catch up on: Forever adds new quests, zones and dungeons, so their quest data has to be built anew. Until it’s complete, the WoW Forever dungeon helper lists every dungeon’s quests for your faction with their rewards, and our dungeon guides, such as the Hall of Thanes and the Ruins of Lordaeron, go through them one by one.

Frequently asked questions

Do Classic addons work in WoW Forever?

Not as a rule. WoW Forever runs on modern World of Warcraft’s addon system rather than Classic’s, so an addon needs a version made for Forever. Look for Forever support on the addon’s page before installing it.

Where do addons go in the WoW Forever beta?

In the beta client’s folder: World of Warcraft/_classic_beta_/Interface/AddOns. Check the folder name Battle.net created on your computer; the launch client may use a different one.

Why are some addons limited in WoW Forever?

WoW Forever applies the addon restrictions modern World of Warcraft introduced with Midnight, which limit what addons can read and do with combat information. Addons that automate combat decisions, like many WeakAuras setups, are affected most.

How can I tell if an addon supports WoW Forever?

Its page or changelog says so, and its download contains a .toc file ending in _Camelot (WoW Forever’s client) or lists interface 16001 for the beta.
