About HC Helper

Built out of frustration with a dozen open tabs

Who I am

I'm Marc, a developer from the Netherlands. I started playing WoW back in 2006 during the Burning Crusade era and have played on and off ever since. I was already playing Hardcore mode before Self-Found was even an option, and these days I play almost exclusively Self-Found, on Soulseeker. My main is an Enhancement Shaman, but on Hardcore I roll whatever class and spec I'm in the mood for.

Why this exists

Hardcore leaves no room for the kind of mistakes standard WoW Classic forgives, a missed quest, a bad pull, an unplanned dungeon run can end a character for good. Before this site existed, staying prepared meant juggling a pile of different websites: one for talent builds, another for what to watch out for in a dungeon, another for dungeon quest locations, another for professions and materials, another for world buff timers, and an item database that was always cluttered. It got old fast.

HC Helper started as a small personal tool to show me where upgrades for my current character were. I figured it would be useful to other players too, so I made it public, and kept expanding it, dungeon guides, gear planning, talents, professions, buff timers, until it became the one site I actually keep open on a second screen while I play.

Why Self-Found specifically

Standard Hardcore is fine, but veteran players with deep gold reserves can buy their way past most gear problems, a level 20 twink set from the Auction House erases much of the early-game tension. Self-Found removes that shortcut entirely: the gear you have is the gear you found. Professions actually matter, and quest rewards stay meaningful instead of being vendor trash compared to whatever was bought on the way in.

It's a stricter ruleset, and it's how I play, so it's what this site is built around by default, the gear planner, the profession guide, and the dungeon loot filters all default to Self-Found logic.

Close calls and losses

Like every Hardcore player, I've died more times than I'd like to admit. Early on I wandered a little too close to Southshore on a low-level character and got cut down by a pair of guards before I even realized what was happening, the kind of death that's entirely your own fault and mildly funny in hindsight. Later I lost a level 39 Shaman in Stranglethorn Vale trying to greedily solo an elite one level before hitting a mount and mail armor, a very avoidable mistake at a very inconvenient level. Scarlet Monastery has given me a few genuine scares too, mostly from respawning trash turning a controlled pull into a group wipe.

I came back to Hardcore properly in 2026 and found that Self-Found had been added in the meantime. It's completely changed how much a quest upgrade or a clean dungeon clear means, traveling the world, gearing up, everything just carries more weight. Most of my deaths this year have come from taking on riskier content together with my cousin, a few close calls and a couple of losses there. My most recent death was solo, deep into Uldaman after what I thought was a full clear, turns out not every scorpion pack agreed with that assessment.

The tools

Dungeon Guide

The original reason any of this exists. Every WoW Classic dungeon with quest pickup locations on the world map, including the Alliance and Horde variants which often start in completely different zones. Boss loot tables filtered for your class. No more full clears with half your quests sitting incomplete in your log.

Gear Planner

Ranks every obtainable item for your class, spec, and level. Filters automatically to Self-Found-legal sources. You can tag items as farming targets to build a concrete plan before committing to a dungeon run, useful for figuring out whether a run is actually worth doing for your current gear needs.

Talent Planner

Interactive talent trees for all nine Classic classes with recommended builds tuned for Hardcore survivability. The recommendation defaults are opinionated on purpose, rather than listing every option and leaving you to figure it out.

Profession Guide

Each profession rated for both Hardcore survival value and Self-Found viability, with efficient leveling paths and notes on which recipes are actually worth your materials. Alchemy and Herbalism paired together is called out as the strongest combination for a new HC character.

World Buff Tracker

Live schedule for world buffs on the official Hardcore servers sourced from the community Discord. Browser and voice notifications so you can actually be in position when the buff fires instead of reading about it twenty minutes later.

There are also written guides for getting started, class selection, leveling safely, and consumables.

How it is maintained

I maintain this in whatever spare time I have. The site is completely free to use. If there's a data error, wrong item stats, a quest that starts somewhere different, a boss drop that doesn't exist. Let me know and I'll fix it quickly. The database is large enough that mistakes are inevitable, and player reports are genuinely how most of them get found.

Reach out at hardcorehelper.contact@gmail.com or through the contact page. Reports about incorrect data are the most useful things you can send.
