WoW Forever Rulesets: PvP vs Normal, RP and Hardcore

By Marc · Updated October 12, 2026

WoW Forever has no realm list. When you create a character you pick a ruleset instead, and each ruleset is one big shared world for your region. It’s the first choice you make for a new character, and it decides who you can group with, whether other players can attack you, and, on PvP, which faction your whole account plays.

The four rulesets

RulesetIn Blizzard’s wordsFactionsAvailable
NormalThe baseline World of Warcraft experience, where players can focus on exploration, questing and cooperation, with PvP when they choose it.BothAt launch
PvPFor players who want every trip into contested territory to carry more danger, excitement and open-world conflict. One per accountAt launch
RoleplayingFor players who want to lean more deeply into the fantasy of Azeroth and seek out like-minded adventurers.BothAt launch
HardcoreFor players seeking the ultimate challenge, where every decision matters and death carries lasting consequences.BothAfter launch (no date yet)

PvP vs Normal: the real differences

  • Open-world fights: on Normal, PvP needs both sides to choose it; on PvP, contested territory is dangerous by design.
  • One faction per account on PvP: once you make a character on one side, you can’t make one on the other side on that ruleset. Blizzard says the PvP ruleset will also get faction balance systems like Season of Discovery’s.
  • Who you play with: you can only group with players on the same ruleset, so pick the one your friends or guild pick.
  • Switching later: there are no free moves between rulesets; switching means a new character.

Your Legacy progress and collections are shared across Normal, PvP and Roleplaying, so the choice doesn’t cost you account progress. Hardcore is the exception: see the Legacy system guide.

Hardcore

Hardcore comes after launch; Blizzard hasn’t given a date. It’s fully separate: progress flows out of Hardcore but not into it, and a Hardcore character that dies can move to another ruleset. Until then, the WoW Forever helper lets you plan a Normal, Self-Found or Solo Self-Found character, and its gear helper only shows gear your play mode can get.

Character names

Without realms, names work differently: every character has a first name and a last name, and the full name must be unique in your region. Two players can share a first name as long as the full names differ, and both parts are checked together, so a blocked word split over the two names still isn’t allowed. You can hide your own second name in the world through the nameplate options; it still shows in chat.

Early name reservation runs from October 27 to November 3, 2026, for players with an eligible upgrade (the Skyborne packs), first come, first served. The game itself launches on November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PST.

Frequently asked questions

Does WoW Forever have realms?

No. Instead of a realm you pick a ruleset when you create a character: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or, after launch, Hardcore. Each ruleset is one large shared world per region rather than a single traditional realm.

Can you play both factions on the WoW Forever PvP ruleset?

No. On the PvP ruleset you can only create characters of one faction. Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both.

Can you group with players on another ruleset?

No, cross-ruleset grouping isn’t supported, and Horde and Alliance still can’t group together. Battlegrounds can include players from other rulesets, except Hardcore.

Can you move a character to another ruleset?

Not freely: playing on another ruleset means making a new character there. A Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, PvP included.

How do character names work in WoW Forever?

Every character has a first name and a last name, and the full name has to be unique within your region. Two characters can share a first name as long as their full names differ. You can hide your own second name in the nameplate options.
