Alchemy

CraftingHC: SSSF: Excellent

Alchemy is arguably the most important profession for Hardcore. It converts herbs into potions and elixirs that can save your life in desperate moments. Major Healing Potions, Free Action Potions, and Limited Invulnerability Potions are all obtainable self-found, and each one represents a second chance you would not otherwise have.

HC Note

Life-saving consumables (Free Action, LIP, heals) are the core survival toolkit for any HC character.

Best paired with Herbalism
Recommended for every class, but especially valuable for melee classes who cannot self-heal.
SSF Note

Alchemy is one of the strongest and most practical professions in Self-Found, because it gives you direct survival tools instead of just occasional gear upgrades. Paired with Herbalism, most of your core materials come naturally while questing, and every potion you make can actually matter in Hardcore.

The biggest advantage is consistency. Healing potions, elixirs, defense boosts, stat buffs, swim speed, Free Action Potions, and utility potions can all help you survive bad pulls, escape mistakes, or make difficult quests safer. Unlike crafted gear, potions rarely become wasted just because you got a better drop.

That said, Alchemy has some cons in Self-Found. You need to spend bag space on herbs, vials, and finished potions, and some recipes require specific herbs from zones you may not naturally visit. You may also find yourself over-saving potions for later and not actually using the profession's main benefit. Some of the best recipes are vendor-limited, drops, or locked behind awkward materials.

The main downside is that Alchemy does not directly improve your gear, and it rewards preparation — if you forget to restock before a risky quest, you lose most of its value. Overall though, Alchemy is probably the safest and most reliable Self-Found profession. A great choice if you want steady survivability and more emergency options — just make sure you actually use your potions instead of hoarding them forever.
