WoW Forever Changes: Transmog, Mounts, Talents and Combat
The system changes in WoW Forever compared with Classic: transmog and Classic Mode, Burning Crusade-style mounts, the new 16-point talents, combined hit and crit, Paladin changes, food buffs and more.

Blizzard says WoW Forever’s combat “remains rooted in the feel and pacing of World of Warcraft: Classic”, but a lot around it works differently: transmog, mounts, talents and how stats add up. This page goes through the system changes Blizzard has described. For what the beta data shows has changed, from items to talents and professions, see WoW Forever vs Classic.
Transmog and Classic Mode
WoW Forever has transmog, and it’s up to you whether you use it:
- Outfits: a transmogrifier in certain cities lets you set up transmogrified outfits, or turn the system off entirely.
- Classic Mode: if you choose Classic Mode when you first launch the game, transmog is disabled automatically.
- Collecting anyway: even with transmog off, you keep collecting appearances from new gear, so nothing is lost if you change your mind.
- Dungeon drops for everyone: when a bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare item drops in a dungeon, every eligible looter gets its appearance.
- Raid epics for the winner: an epic raid drop only grants its appearance to the player it binds to.
- Level 60 looks: low-level characters can’t use high-level appearances until level 60.
Mounts and riding
WoW Forever adopts the Burning Crusade’s way of paying for mounts: the cost moves into the riding training, and you get a mount when you learn to ride. In Classic you paid for the riding skill and then bought the mount on top.
Mounts from elsewhere follow the same rule: the Skyborne Heroic Pack’s Cerulean Prideclaw needs the riding skill bought in game before you can use it, and the Legacy system’s reward track ends with the Reins of the Spectral Bear.
Talents
- A new milestone: Classic’s one-point milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points are “now joined by a new 16-point milestone”.
- Buffs are baseline: talents that granted key class buffs, such as Divine Spirit and Blessing of Kings, now come with the class.
Every tree was reworked on top of that. Which talents are new for your class, tree by tree, is in the class guides, and you can try them in the talent calculator.
Hit, crit and healing
- Hit is one stat: spell, melee and ranged hit chance are combined.
- So is crit: spell, melee and ranged critical strike chance are combined too.
- Healing gear helps damage: bonus healing now also gives one third as much bonus damage.
That makes gear more flexible: a hit or crit item helps casters and fighters alike, and a healer’s gear isn’t wasted when they deal damage.
Class and race changes
Paladinclass
Holy Strike at level 6: an instant weapon strike that deals Holy damage, on a 12-second cooldown. Seals are no longer consumed by Judgment, so less recasting. Paladins still have no interrupt and still can’t slow targets.
StoneformDwarf
Its defensive bonus now reduces Physical damage taken, instead of increasing armor.
CannibalizeUndead
Now restores mana as well as health.
New race and class combinationssix at launch
Blizzard is adding six new class-and-race combinations, with more planned later, plus the new Skyborne race.
Every race’s racials are in our racials guide, and the Paladin’s full set of changes in the Paladin guide.
Combat, loot and food
- Pacing: a solo player can expect an ordinary creature to take roughly 10 to 15 seconds to defeat.
- Boss loot: unique dungeon boss items are now blue (Rare) quality.
- Food buffs: food buffs got a major update, and crafted food can give a small experience bonus as well as stats. Camps are a natural place to refresh them.

Frequently asked questions
Does WoW Forever have transmog?
Yes. You set up transmogrified outfits at a transmogrifier in certain cities, or turn the system off entirely. Choosing Classic Mode when you first start the game turns transmog off automatically.
Can you collect appearances with transmog turned off?
Yes. Blizzard says you keep collecting appearances from new gear even while the system is disabled. Low-level characters can’t use high-level appearances until level 60.
How do mounts work in WoW Forever?
Burning Crusade-style: the cost is in training riding, and you get a mount when you learn it, instead of buying the mount separately as in Classic.
What changed for Paladins in WoW Forever?
Paladins get Holy Strike at level 6, an instant weapon strike that deals Holy damage on a 12-second cooldown, and Seals are no longer used up by Judgment. They still have no interrupt and no way to slow a target.
Are hit and crit different in WoW Forever?
Yes. Spell, melee and ranged hit chance are combined into one, and so are spell, melee and ranged critical strike chance.
