Shaman is a Horde-only hybrid with no single defining survival cooldown, but also no glaring hole in its kit. Totems provide damage, healing, and utility that no other class brings, Ghost Wolf gives a reliable non-combat travel option, and all three specs are viable ways to level solo. It's a moderate-difficulty class: nothing saves you the way a Paladin's Bubble or a Hunter's Feign Death does, but careful totem placement and shock spells give you real tools in almost every situation. Safest — Tauren
+5% max health and War Stomp (a free AoE stun) are both genuinely strong Hardcore tools. War Stomp in particular is one of the better emergency buttons available to any Horde race — stun the enemy, then reposition or finish the fight on your terms.
Best damage — Orc
Axe Specialization suits an Enhancement build using axes, and Blood Fury adds a straightforward Attack Power cooldown. Hardiness (25% reduced stun duration) is a useful bonus for a melee-adjacent spec.
Best Self-Found — Tauren
The extra health buffer matters more when your itemization is inconsistent, and War Stomp doesn't depend on finding any specific weapon or gear type.

Recommended leveling tree — Enhancement
Enhancement is the most common Hardcore leveling spec because melee combat with Shocks and Windfury/Flametongue-buffed weapons gives strong, consistent damage without being as mana-dependent as pure casting. Flurry and Thundering Strikes both add meaningful sustained damage, and Improved Lightning Shield gives passive retaliation damage while you fight in melee.
Important milestones
Stormstrike (capstone) is a strong burst option once available. Weapon Mastery reduces disarm duration and increases parry — small but real Hardcore-relevant survivability while you're in melee range.
When Elemental or Restoration become viable
Elemental is a strong choice if you'd rather fight from range — Lightning Mastery and Elemental Mastery both improve your burst spell damage, and you avoid melee risk entirely. Leveling strategy by level bracket
Levels 1-20
Get comfortable dropping the right totem for the situation before it becomes second nature — a Stoneskin or Strength of Earth totem before a pull, a Healing Stream if you're taking sustained damage. Totems only work if you remember to use them, and early on it's easy to forget in the heat of a fight.
Levels 20-40
Ghost Wolf becomes available and is worth using between pulls to reposition quickly and safely rather than walking through unnecessary aggro range. This is also when Windfury Totem (if leveling Enhancement) and Earth Shock's interrupt utility both become core parts of your combat routine.
Levels 40-60
Dungeon groups value Shaman heavily for the buff totems alone, on top of whatever role you're filling. This is where Enhancement's melee damage or Elemental's burst really starts to compete with dedicated DPS classes, and where a Restoration Shaman becomes a legitimately strong primary healer.
Gear priorities
Stat priorities depend heavily on spec: Enhancement wants Strength, Agility, and Attack Power; Elemental and Restoration want Intellect and Spirit for mana sustain, with Restoration adding Healing Power. Stamina is valuable across all three specs, especially for Enhancement given mail armor's lower mitigation compared to plate.
Weapon choice for Enhancement matters — Windfury Weapon enchant synergizes best with fast one-handers, so factor that into which weapon upgrades you prioritize rather than chasing raw DPS alone.

- Leatherworking: mail armor crafting lines up directly with Shaman's gear type.
- Enchanting: Windfury and Rockbiter weapon enchants (available to Shaman regardless of profession, but Enchanting adds gear enchants too) compound well with an Enhancement build.
- Alchemy: covers the emergency tools totems and shocks don't — Free Action Potions for roots, healing potions as mana-free backup sustain.

Emergency abilities and survival tactics
- Ghost Wolf: your main non-combat repositioning tool — use it the moment you decide to disengage, not after you've already taken more damage trying to walk away.
- Earth Shock: can interrupt a dangerous enemy cast, which matters more for a Shaman without a hard CC break than for most casters.
- Healing Stream Totem: drop it proactively in a fight you expect to take sustained damage, not only once you're already low.
- Dangerous enemy types: anything that forces you to move constantly is a problem, since totems require standing still to place and lose value if you have to abandon them.
- Reacting to adds: Frost Shock slows a fleeing or additional enemy, buying time to finish your primary target or retreat.

- Getting forced to move away from placed totems mid-fight, losing their buffs at the exact moment they mattered most.
