Overview

Molten Core is the first 40-player raid: a cavern of lava under Blackrock Mountain, ruled by Ragnaros the Firelord. It has ten bosses, most of them with a pack of adds, and a lot of trash in between. A full clear takes an organised raid two to three hours.

The boss fights themselves are among the easiest raid fights in the game, which makes Molten Core the place where most players learn to raid. On a Hardcore realm the danger is the numbers: forty players means forty chances to stand in fire, pull a patrol or get knocked into lava, and nobody can be resurrected. Most deaths here come from trash and from a handful of mechanics: Living Bomb, Lava Bombs, Ragnaros’s knockback and mind-controlled raid members.

Getting in

  • The entrance is a portal deep inside Blackrock Depths, in Blackrock Mountain (between the Searing Gorge and the Burning Steppes). Without the attunement, every raider runs through that part of Blackrock Depths each week.
  • The attunement quest, Attunement to the Core, comes from Lothos Riftwaker at the bottom of Blackrock Mountain. It asks for a Core Fragment, which lies right next to the Molten Core portal in Blackrock Depths. Once it’s done, Lothos teleports you straight into the raid.
  • Majordomo Executus only appears once seven runes in the raid are doused: one near Magmadar, Gehennas, Garr, Shazzrah, Baron Geddon, Golemagg and Sulfuron Harbinger. Dousing a rune takes an Aqual Quintessence from Duke Hydraxis, on an island off the coast of Azshara, after his quest chain with the Hydraxian Waterlords. At Revered you get the Eternal Quintessence, which can be used again every week.
  • Ragnaros is summoned by talking to Majordomo in the Firelord’s chamber after you’ve beaten him.

Preparation, role by role

Tanks

Bring a fire resistance set for Ragnaros: the main tank gets hit by Elemental Fire and the knockback the whole fight. Elsewhere your normal gear is fine. Several tanks are needed for the bosses with adds (Lucifron, Gehennas, Garr, Golemagg, Sulfuron, Majordomo).

Healers

Know your dispel and decurse jobs before the first pull: Lucifron, Gehennas, Shazzrah and Baron Geddon all put debuffs on the raid that have to come off quickly. Bring plenty of mana consumables; Molten Core is long.

Melee damage

Expect to move out a lot: Baron Geddon’s Inferno, Golemagg’s Earthquake below 10% and Ragnaros’s knockback all hit the melee. Some fire resistance helps on Ragnaros.

Ranged damage

Spread out on fights with Lava Bombs, Living Bombs and Fireballs, and don’t stand where a knockback or a patrol can reach you.

What each class brings

Mage

Remove curses: Lucifron’s Curse, Gehennas’ Curse and Shazzrah’s Curse.

Druid

Remove curses alongside the mages, and Innervate your healers on the long fights.

Priest

Dispel Impending Doom on Lucifron and Ignite Mana on Baron Geddon. Fear Ward the Magmadar tank.

Paladin

Dispel magic like the priests, and run Fire Resistance Aura on Ragnaros (Alliance).

Shaman

Fire Resistance Totem for every melee group on Ragnaros, Tremor Totem against Magmadar’s Panic (Horde).

Hunter

Tranquilizing Shot removes Magmadar’s Frenzy. The Tome of Tranquilizing Shot drops inside Molten Core, so get it to your hunters early.

Warlock

Banish Garr’s Firesworn (they’re elementals), and hand out healthstones before every boss.

Consumables

  • Greater Fire Protection Potions: one for Ragnaros at least, more for tanks.
  • Major Healing and Major Mana Potions, healthstones, and Demonic or Dark Runes for healers.
  • Flasks and elixirs if your raid uses them: Elixir of the Mongoose, Greater Arcane Elixir, Mageblood Potion, Elixir of Fortitude.
  • Fire resistance gear and Fire Protection potions matter far more on a Hardcore realm than a few percent more damage.

Dangerous trash

On Hardcore, the trash between the bosses kills more raiders than the bosses do.

Core Hound packs

Packs of five Core Hounds. A dead hound gets back up unless the whole pack dies within a few seconds of each other, so bring them all low together and finish them at once with area damage.

Molten Giants and Molten Destroyers

They hit very hard and knock players away. Tanks only in front of them; everyone else at range. A knockback near the lava edges can throw you into it.

Lava Surgers

Patrols that charge and knock players back. Watch for them while fighting anything else, and pull them on your own terms.

Firelords

They summon Lava Spawn, which split into two when they hit. Kill the spawn fast, before they fill the room.

Ancient Core Hounds

Single big hounds with a frontal Lava Breath and one random debuff ability. Tank them facing away from the raid.

The bosses

In the order most raids kill them.

Lucifron's model

Boss 1 of 10

Lucifron

Lucifron and his two Flamewaker Protectors. The fight is about the debuffs: dispel, decurse, and deal with mind-controlled players.

Abilities

Impending Doom

A magic debuff on nearby players that deals 2,000 Shadow damage after 10 seconds unless it’s dispelled.

Lucifron’s Curse

Doubles the cost of spells and abilities. Remove it quickly from healers.

Shadow Shock

Shadow damage to players near him.

Dominate MindFlamewaker Protector

Mind-controls a player, who then attacks the raid.

Your job

Tanks

Three tanks: one on Lucifron, one on each Protector, held apart from each other. The Protectors die first.

Healers

Dispel Impending Doom the moment it lands; 2,000 damage on a cloth wearer is a big chunk. Keep an eye on whoever is mind-controlled: they will be hit by the raid.

Melee damage

Kill the Protectors first, then Lucifron. Stop attacking a mind-controlled player; they’re your raid member.

Ranged damage

Same order: Protectors, then Lucifron. Stay within range of a dispeller.

Class jobs

Mage

Decurse Lucifron’s Curse, and Polymorph a mind-controlled player so nobody has to hit them.

Priest

Dispel Impending Doom, healers and cloth wearers first.

Paladin

Cleanse Impending Doom.

What gets people killed

  • A mind-controlled player killed by the raid is a real death on Hardcore. Crowd-control them (Polymorph, a Fear, a Stun) and let the control run out.
  • Undispelled Impending Doom on several low-health players at once.

Magmadar's model

Boss 2 of 10

Magmadar

A giant Core Hound. Its Frenzy has to be removed with Tranquilizing Shot, and its Panic fears the whole raid every 30 seconds or so.

Abilities

Frenzy

Magmadar attacks much faster until a hunter removes it with Tranquilizing Shot.

Panic

Fears everyone nearby for 8 seconds.

Lava Bomb

Leaves a patch of fire on the ground under a player. Step out right away.

Magma Spit

A fire damage-over-time on melee who hit him.

Your job

Tanks

Tank him against a wall, away from the raid, so feared players don’t run into him or into trash. Warriors break Panic with Berserker Rage timed just before it; otherwise a Fear Ward or Tremor Totem keeps you in place. A second tank is ready in case the first is feared.

Healers

Expect the tank to take a burst while he’s frenzied. Spread out so a fear doesn’t throw everyone into the same Lava Bomb.

Melee damage

Hit him from the side. Step out of Lava Bombs even mid-attack.

Ranged damage

Stay at range and spread out, with clear ground behind you in case you’re feared.

Class jobs

Hunter

Tranquilizing Shot on every Frenzy. Set up a rotation of two or three hunters so it never stays up.

Priest

Fear Ward on the main tank before each Panic.

Shaman

Tremor Totem near the melee (Horde).

Warrior

Berserker Rage prevents the fear: tanks swap to Berserker Stance for it and back.

What gets people killed

  • Feared players running into the next trash pack. Clear the area around Magmadar first.
  • Standing in Lava Bombs; they hurt a lot more than they look.
  • A frenzy nobody removes, crushing the tank.
Magmadar’s loot, with your upgrades marked →
Gehennas's model

Boss 3 of 10

Gehennas

Gehennas and two Flamewakers. His curse cuts healing taken by 75%, so decursing decides the fight.

Abilities

Gehennas’ Curse

Reduces healing on nearby players by 75% for 5 minutes. Remove it.

Rain of Fire

Fire rains on an area. Move out at once.

Shadow Bolt

A heavy hit on a random player.

Your job

Tanks

One tank on Gehennas, one on each Flamewaker. The Flamewakers die first.

Healers

Healing a cursed player does a quarter of its normal amount: tell the decursers who still has it.

Melee damage

Kill the Flamewakers, then Gehennas. Move out of Rain of Fire before you finish your attack.

Ranged damage

Spread out, so one Rain of Fire hits one player.

Class jobs

Mage

Decurse Gehennas’ Curse, tanks and healers first.

Druid

Decurse alongside the mages.

What gets people killed

  • A cursed tank: their healing is cut by 75%, so they can die even with all healers on them.
  • Standing in Rain of Fire while the curse is up.
Gehennas’s loot, with your upgrades marked →
Garr's model

Boss 4 of 10

Garr

Garr and his eight Firesworn. The Firesworn explode when they die, so they’re kept apart and killed one at a time.

Abilities

Antimagic Pulse

Strips a buff from everyone near Garr.

Magma Shackles

Slows everyone near him by 60%.

EruptionFiresworn

A Firesworn explodes when it dies, burning everyone nearby.

Separation AnxietyFiresworn

A Firesworn pulled too far from Garr becomes much stronger.

Your job

Tanks

One tank holds Garr. The other tanks each pick up one or two Firesworn; the rest are banished. Keep the Firesworn close enough to Garr that they don’t get Separation Anxiety.

Healers

The add tanks take a lot of fire damage. When a Firesworn dies, everyone near it takes an Eruption.

Melee damage

Kill the Firesworn one at a time, and step away from it just before it dies, so the Eruption doesn’t hit you.

Ranged damage

Kill the Firesworn your raid leader marks. Don’t hit a banished one: it breaks the banish.

Class jobs

Warlock

Banish a Firesworn each and keep it banished until it’s its turn. Renew it before it runs out.

What gets people killed

  • Several Firesworn dying at once next to the melee.
  • A banish breaking on an add nobody is tanking.

Shazzrah's model

Boss 5 of 10

Shazzrah

A caster who blinks around the room. His Arcane Explosion hurts everyone close to him, and his curse doubles magic damage taken.

Abilities

Arcane Explosion

800 Arcane damage to everyone near him, cast again and again.

Shazzrah’s Curse

Doubles magic damage taken. Remove it.

Counterspell

Interrupts every caster near him and locks that school of magic.

Deaden Magic

Halves the magic damage he takes. Dispel it off him.

Gate of Shazzrah

He teleports to a random player and forgets his threat.

Your job

Tanks

Several tanks spread around the room, so whoever he blinks next to can taunt him at once.

Healers

Arcane Explosion hits the melee hard, and twice as hard while they’re cursed. Stand outside its range, but close enough to heal the melee.

Melee damage

Follow him when he blinks. Get decursed: a cursed melee takes double from every explosion.

Ranged damage

Don’t stand together: where he blinks, he explodes.

Class jobs

Mage

Decurse, and keep your casts in mind: his Counterspell locks your school.

Priest

Dispel Deaden Magic off him (Dispel Magic works on enemies).

Shaman

Purge Deaden Magic off him.

What gets people killed

  • A cursed player in melee range during Arcane Explosions.
  • Low-health healers clumped together when he blinks to them.
Shazzrah’s loot, with your upgrades marked →
Baron Geddon's model

Boss 6 of 10

Baron Geddon

The Living Bomb fight. One player at a time becomes a bomb and has to run away from the raid before it goes off.

Abilities

Living Bomb

After 8 seconds the player explodes, burning themselves and everyone near them.

Inferno

He burns everything around him for a few seconds. Run out.

Ignite Mana

Burns mana every few seconds and deals damage for the mana burned. Dispel it.

Armageddon

Near death he explodes. Stay away from him at the very end.

Your job

Tanks

Tank him where he stands. During Inferno you can stay if your healers are ready, or step out with the melee.

Healers

Heal the Living Bomb target before it goes off; the explosion hits them too. Dispel Ignite Mana from healers first.

Melee damage

Run out when he casts Inferno, back in when it ends. If you’re the bomb, run out of the raid at once.

Ranged damage

Agree on a spot where bombs go, away from everyone. If you’re the bomb, go there straight away; 8 seconds is short.

Class jobs

Priest

Dispel Ignite Mana from healers and mana users.

Paladin

Cleanse Ignite Mana, and keep a Blessing of Protection ready for a bomb target that can’t get out.

Mage

If you’re the bomb, Blink gets you out fastest.

What gets people killed

  • A Living Bomb going off in the middle of the raid. It’s the most common death in Molten Core.
  • Melee still in Inferno when it starts ticking.
  • Standing next to him at the end, when Armageddon goes off.

Golemagg the Incinerator's model

Boss 7 of 10

Golemagg the Incinerator

A giant with two Core Ragers. The Ragers can’t be killed: they die when Golemagg does.

Abilities

Magma Splash

A fire damage-over-time on players who hit him in melee. It stacks.

Pyroblast

A big fireball at a random player.

Earthquake

Below 10% health, he hits everyone near him again and again. Melee have to leave.

Your job

Tanks

One tank on Golemagg, one or two on the Core Ragers, well away from Golemagg. Ragers heal to full at half health, so don’t bother hitting them.

Healers

The melee’s Magma Splash stacks get high on a long fight. Heal the Rager tank too: the dogs hit hard.

Melee damage

Watch your Magma Splash stacks. Leave him at 10% health, before Earthquake.

Ranged damage

All damage on Golemagg; he’s the whole fight.

Class jobs

Warrior

The Rager tank needs a shield and healers of their own.

What gets people killed

  • Melee staying in after 10% health, when Earthquake starts.
  • The Core Ragers getting loose: they keep hitting until Golemagg dies.
Golemagg the Incinerator’s loot, with your upgrades marked →
Sulfuron Harbinger's model

Boss 8 of 10

Sulfuron Harbinger

Sulfuron and four Flamewaker Priests that heal him and each other. Interrupt the heals and kill the priests first.

Abilities

Dark MendingFlamewaker Priest

A huge heal on Sulfuron or a priest. Interrupt every one.

Shadow Word: PainFlamewaker Priest

Shadow damage over time on a player.

ImmolateFlamewaker Priest

Fire damage and a burn on a player.

Inspire

Makes a priest hit harder and faster.

Hand of Ragnaros

Fire damage to everyone near him, knocking them back.

Flame Spear

A burning spear at a random player.

Your job

Tanks

A tank on Sulfuron and one on each priest, spread out so the priests can’t heal each other easily.

Healers

Shadow Word: Pain and Immolate land on many players at once. Dispel them where you can.

Melee damage

Interrupt Dark Mending: every one that goes off undoes a lot of damage. Kill the priests one by one, then Sulfuron.

Ranged damage

Same kill order. Dispel Shadow Word: Pain if you can.

Class jobs

Rogue

Kick Dark Mending; rotate kicks so every cast is stopped.

Shaman

Earth Shock interrupts a heal from range.

Mage

Counterspell a priest’s heal.

Warrior

Pummel or Shield Bash the priests’ heals.

What gets people killed

  • A long fight because the heals go through, ending with healers out of mana.
  • Getting knocked back by Hand of Ragnaros into a pack nobody pulled.
Sulfuron Harbinger’s loot, with your upgrades marked →
Majordomo Executus's model

Boss 9 of 10

Majordomo Executus

Majordomo can’t be killed. His eight guards can, and when the last one dies he gives up and leads you to Ragnaros.

Abilities

Magic Reflection

His guards reflect spells for 10 seconds. Casters stop.

Damage Shield

His guards hurt everyone who hits them for 10 seconds. Melee stop.

Teleport

Sends his tank into the burning coals at the edge of the room.

Blast WaveFlamewaker Elite

Fire damage around the Elite, slowing everyone hit.

Fire BlastFlamewaker Elite

A heavy fire hit on a random player.

Shadow ShockFlamewaker Healer

Shadow damage; the Healers also heal the other guards.

Your job

Tanks

Many tanks: one for Majordomo (he only needs to be held), and one for each guard. When he teleports his tank into the coals, run out and pick him up again.

Healers

Watch the tank in the coals; it burns. Elites’ Blast Wave hits everyone near them.

Melee damage

Stop attacking during Damage Shield, or you hurt yourself on every hit. Kill the Healers first, then the Elites.

Ranged damage

Stop casting during Magic Reflection; your own spells come back at you. Same kill order: Healers, then Elites.

What gets people killed

  • Casters killing themselves on Magic Reflection, or melee on Damage Shield. Watch his shields, not just the target.
  • Too many guards loose at once: kill them one at a time.
Majordomo Executus’s loot, with your upgrades marked →
Ragnaros's model

Boss 10 of 10

Ragnaros

The Firelord. He never moves, knocks the melee back again and again, and after three minutes he dives under the lava while his Sons of Flame attack.

Abilities

Wrath of Ragnaros

Knocks everyone in melee range far back, the tank too.

Elemental Fire

A burn on his current target.

Lava Burst

Lava erupts around the room, hitting players near it.

Magma Blast

If no one is in melee range, he hits a random player for 6,000 fire damage.

Sons of Flame

After three minutes he submerges for 90 seconds and eight Sons of Flame attack. They burn mana.

Your job

Tanks

Two tanks with fire resistance. When Wrath of Ragnaros throws the first tank back, the second is in melee range at once, so he never runs out of targets and casts Magma Blast.

Healers

The tanks take the most damage. Stay out of the lava’s reach, and keep mana for the Sons of Flame phase.

Melee damage

Stand so the knockback throws you onto ground, not into lava. Run back in after each one. During the submerge, kill the Sons of Flame.

Ranged damage

Spread out, away from Lava Bursts. Burn him hard before three minutes run out; during the submerge, kill the Sons of Flame before they reach the healers.

Class jobs

Shaman

Fire Resistance Totem in every melee group (Horde).

Paladin

Fire Resistance Aura for the melee (Alliance).

Hunter

Help kill the Sons of Flame; they move fast.

What gets people killed

  • Being knocked into the lava by Wrath of Ragnaros. Check where you stand before the pull.
  • Nobody in melee range: Magma Blast kills a random player.
  • Sons of Flame reaching the healers while the tanks are busy.
Ragnaros’s loot, with your upgrades marked →

Staying alive on Hardcore

There are no resurrections on a Hardcore realm: a soulstone, a battle resurrection or a spirit healer won’t bring anyone back. These habits keep a raid alive here.

  • Clear every pack between you and the boss before you pull it, and watch for Lava Surger patrols.
  • Know your job before the pull: which add you tank, which curse you remove, where bombs go.
  • A drink of Greater Fire Protection Potion absorbs more damage than any healer can heal at once. Use them on Ragnaros and on bad pulls.
  • If something goes wrong, the raid leader calls it: a controlled wipe where people run out is far better than everyone fighting on.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need fire resistance for Molten Core?

Only the Ragnaros tanks really need a fire resistance set. Some fire resistance helps the melee on Ragnaros, and Greater Fire Protection Potions are worth bringing for everyone. Everywhere else, normal gear is fine.

How do I get attuned to Molten Core?

Take Attunement to the Core from Lothos Riftwaker at the bottom of Blackrock Mountain, and bring him the Core Fragment that lies next to the Molten Core portal inside Blackrock Depths. After that he teleports you into the raid.

Why doesn’t Majordomo Executus appear?

Seven runes in the raid have to be doused first, with an Aqual Quintessence from Duke Hydraxis of the Hydraxian Waterlords, and the bosses next to them killed.

What level do I need for Molten Core?

Level 60, with pre-raid gear from the level 55–60 dungeons. On a Hardcore realm, also bring fire protection potions and know the fights before you go.
