Overview

Naxxramas is Kel’Thuzad’s floating necropolis over the Eastern Plaguelands, the last and hardest Classic raid. Its fifteen bosses are spread over four wings (the Arachnid, Plague, Military and Construct Quarters), and the Frostwyrm Lair with Sapphiron and Kel’Thuzad opens once all four are done. It drops Tier 3.

Almost every fight here has a mechanic that kills on one mistake: Heigan’s dance, Thaddius’s jump and polarity, Sapphiron’s Frost Breath, Kel’Thuzad’s Shadow Fissures. On a Hardcore realm, Naxxramas is where raids are most likely to lose people, so each fight is worth practising in your head before the pull.

Getting in

  • Archmage Angela Dosantos at Light’s Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands attunes you: it needs Honored with the Argent Dawn and a fee in gold and materials. At Revered the fee is lower, and at Exalted it’s free.
  • The four wings can be done in any order. Each one ends in a portal back to the entrance; when all four are done, the Frostwyrm Lair opens.
  • Frost resistance gear is needed for Sapphiron, for the whole raid. Crafters make most of it from patterns the Argent Dawn sells and Frozen Runes found in Naxxramas, so start early.
  • Shadow Protection Potions are needed for Loatheb, and a lot of Greater Fire, Frost and Nature Protection Potions help elsewhere.

Preparation, role by role

Tanks

Patchwerk needs three or four tanks with very high health to take Hateful Strikes. The Four Horsemen need four tanks rotating between corners. On Razuvious, priests tank with mind-controlled understudies.

Healers

Loatheb only lets each healer cast one heal per minute, so the raid relies on rotations. Healers rotate between corners on the Four Horsemen too. Cure disease on Heigan and poison on Maexxna.

Melee damage

Lots of movement: Heigan’s dance, Grobbulus’s bombs, Thaddius’s polarity. Stay out of Kel’Thuzad’s fissures.

Ranged damage

Spread out on Sapphiron and Kel’Thuzad. On Gluth, help slow the zombies after Decimate.

What each class brings

Priest

Mind Control the Death Knight Understudies on Razuvious; Shackle Undead the Guardians of Icecrown on Kel’Thuzad; Mind Control a Worshipper for Faerlina.

Mage

Remove curses on Noth and Sapphiron (Life Drain); slow Gluth’s zombies; interrupt Kel’Thuzad’s Frostbolt.

Druid

Remove curses too, and cure poisons on Maexxna.

Hunter

Tranquilizing Shot on Gluth’s Frenzy; Frost Trap the zombies.

Paladin

Cleanse diseases on Heigan and poison on Maexxna (Alliance).

Shaman

Frost Resistance Totem on Sapphiron, Poison Cleansing on Maexxna (Horde).

Rogue

Interrupt Kel’Thuzad’s Frostbolt; kill spores on Loatheb.

Warlock

Healthstones; Banish isn’t needed much here, so you’re damage almost everywhere.

Consumables

  • Frost resistance gear and Greater Frost Protection Potions for Sapphiron.
  • Shadow Protection Potions for Loatheb.
  • Greater Nature Protection Potions for Faerlina and Grobbulus.
  • Major Healing and Mana Potions, healthstones, and Restorative Potions.

Dangerous trash

On Hardcore, the trash between the bosses kills more raiders than the bosses do.

Spider wing packs

Venom stalkers and necro stalkers that charge and poison, and webs that root. Cure poisons constantly.

Plague wing packs

Plague slimes and stoneskin gargoyles, which turn to stone to heal: kill them before they do. Before Heigan, the Eye Stalks only hit nearby players.

Military wing packs

Death knights and their captains hit very hard and knock players away; the riders’ horses come after the riders.

Construct wing packs

Patchwork golems, bile retchers and living monstrosities with chain lightning. Patchwork Golems stomp and cleave everyone around them.

The bosses

In the order most raids kill them.

Staying alive on Hardcore

There are no resurrections on a Hardcore realm: a soulstone, a battle resurrection or a spirit healer won’t bring anyone back. These habits keep a raid alive here.

  • Frost resistance gear for Sapphiron, for everyone, before you enter the Frostwyrm Lair.
  • Shadow Protection Potions for Loatheb, and a healing rotation that everyone knows.
  • Mind-controlled players are crowd-controlled, never killed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get attuned to Naxxramas?

Talk to Archmage Angela Dosantos at Light’s Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands. You need Honored with the Argent Dawn and a fee in gold and materials, which drops at Revered and disappears at Exalted.

Which Naxxramas wing should we do first?

Any order works. Many raids start with the Arachnid Quarter (Anub’Rekhan, Faerlina, Maexxna), which is the most forgiving.

How much frost resistance do I need for Sapphiron?

As much as your raid can gather: the whole raid takes frost damage all fight. Tanks and healers need the most.
