Scarlet Monastery Hardcore Guide

Level 28-45 (varies by wing) · Tirisfal Glades · Both factions

High Inquisitor Whitemane, the final boss of Scarlet Monastery Cathedral

Overview

Scarlet Monastery is actually four separate wings sharing one entrance — Graveyard, Library, Armory, and Cathedral — each with its own difficulty and level range. Most groups run them roughly in that order, since Graveyard and Library are shorter and more forgiving, while Cathedral is the longest, hardest, and ends in the dungeon's most dangerous fight. Treat this as four distinct outings rather than one uniform dungeon when planning a Hardcore run.

Quest prep checklist

Scarlet Monastery quests come from multiple zones and factions — Ironforge and Hillsbrad Foothills for Alliance, Undercity and Tirisfal Glades for Horde, plus a few picked up inside the wings themselves. Check every relevant hub before committing to a specific wing, since a quest for Cathedral won't help you if you're only planning to run Graveyard that session.

Wing-by-wing hazards

Graveyard

The easiest and lowest-level wing, ending with Interrogator Vishas and eventually Bloodmage Thalnos. A reasonable first wing for a group new to the Monastery — undead trash and straightforward boss fights with few surprises.

Library

Ends with Houndmaster Loksey and Arcanist Doan. Loksey's hounds can apply a fear effect — have a plan for a feared party member rather than letting them run into unrelated trash. Doan is a caster who should be interrupted or focused quickly.

Armory

The shortest wing, built around a single boss, Herod. Herod hits hard and gains a berserk-style damage increase the longer the fight runs — this is a fight to end quickly rather than one to play safe and slow.

Cathedral (hardest wing)

The longest and most dangerous wing, with a hidden optional boss (High Inquisitor Fairbanks) and a real gauntlet of Scarlet Crusade trash before reaching Scarlet Commander Mograine and, finally, High Inquisitor Whitemane. This is where most Scarlet Monastery Hardcore risk concentrates — see below.

The Mograine / Whitemane fight

This is the single most important mechanic to understand before running Cathedral. After your group brings Scarlet Commander Mograine to low health, High Inquisitor Whitemane can resurrect him mid-fight with a powerful damage and healing buff active. A group that isn't ready for this can find itself suddenly fighting a fully-healed, empowered Mograine right when they expected the fight to be nearly over. Plan to either burst Mograine down before the resurrection can be cast, or focus Whitemane first to prevent the resurrection entirely — going in without a plan for this mechanic is the dungeon's biggest wipe risk.

Hardcore-specific tips

  • Don't treat all four wings as equally difficult — pace your group's expectations differently for Cathedral than for Graveyard or Library.
  • Know the Mograine/Whitemane resurrection mechanic before you ever reach that fight, not when it happens.
  • Herod's damage escalates the longer his fight runs — this is one of the few Monastery fights where taking it slow and safe is actually the riskier choice.

Summary

Scarlet Monastery is really four dungeons in one, ranging from a gentle introduction (Graveyard) to one of the more mechanically demanding fights in the leveling game (Whitemane). Treat each wing on its own terms, and make sure your group specifically understands the Mograine resurrection before attempting Cathedral.

Frequently asked questions

What level should I be for Scarlet Monastery in Hardcore?

Scarlet Monastery spans levels 28-45 across its four wings — Graveyard and Library are the easiest and lowest-level, Armory is a short single-boss wing, and Cathedral is the hardest and highest-level.

Why is the Cathedral wing considered the most dangerous part of Scarlet Monastery?

Cathedral ends with High Inquisitor Whitemane, who can resurrect Scarlet Commander Mograine mid-fight with a large damage-and-healing buff. A group that doesn't interrupt or plan for the resurrection can suddenly be fighting a fully-healed, empowered boss they thought was almost dead.

Which Scarlet Monastery wing should Hardcore groups start with?

Graveyard is the easiest and most commonly run first, followed by Library. Armory is short with a single boss. Cathedral is the longest, hardest, and highest level, and is usually saved for a group that's cleared the other three first.
