Scholomance Hardcore Guide
Level 57-60 · Caer Darrow · Both factions

Why this dungeon matters
Scholomance is a necromantic academy beneath Caer Darrow, one of the last true leveling dungeons before max level. Its structure is built around six mandatory Guardian bosses that must all die before the final boss, Darkmaster Gandling, will spawn. Unlike some similar "kill several bosses to summon one more" dungeons, this isn't optional here.
Prep before you go in
Several Scholomance encounters (Kirtonos, Marduk Blackpool and Vectus in the Viewing Room, Ras Frostwhisper) are tied to specific quest chains and won't appear or engage the same way without the right quest active. Confirm your quest status for each before assuming a fight will play out as expected.
Fight-by-fight breakdown
Kirtonos the Herald & Jandice Barov
Kirtonos requires a specific quest item to summon. Jandice Barov splits into illusionary copies of herself mid-fight. Check target health bars to find her, since the decoys sit at full health while the real Jandice already has damage on her. AoE tends not to work well on the copies, so identify the real one and focus her down directly.
Doctor Theolen Krastinov ("The Butcher")
One of the six mandatory Guardians. He fights with a bleeding Rend effect and a Backhand that briefly stuns whoever it hits, regardless of who's actually tanking him, so anyone can get targeted. Late in the fight he enters a heavy enrage with significantly increased damage and attack speed, so this is a fight to end quickly and decisively, not to play safe and slow the way you might elsewhere in the dungeon. Oddly, he has no aggro range, so he won't notice you until you actually engage him.
The other Guardians: Instructor Malicia, Lorekeeper Polkelt, The Ravenian, Lord Alexei Barov, Lady Illucia Barov
All five must die alongside The Butcher before Darkmaster Gandling will spawn. Plan your route through the dungeon around clearing all six rather than trying to skip toward the final boss early.
Darkmaster Gandling (final boss)
Only appears after all six Guardians are dead. By the time you reach him your group should already be well-practiced from the Guardian gauntlet. Don't let fatigue from clearing six bosses make the final fight an afterthought.
Survival notes
- Plan for all six Guardians as a mandatory requirement, not an optional bonus. There's no shortcut to Gandling.
- Treat The Butcher as a burst-it-down fight rather than a safe, methodical one, given his escalating damage.
- Confirm quest status for Kirtonos, the Viewing Room bosses, and Ras Frostwhisper before assuming they'll be available in a given run.
Final notes
Scholomance is a demanding, gauntlet-style dungeon where all six Guardians stand between your group and the final boss. Respect The Butcher's escalating damage specifically, and treat the whole run as a sustained effort rather than a series of unrelated fights.

Frequently asked questions
What level should I be for Scholomance in Hardcore?
Scholomance is tuned for levels 57-60, making it one of the last leveling dungeons before max level. It's located beneath Caer Darrow and open to both factions.
Why do all six Guardians need to die in Scholomance?
Darkmaster Gandling, the final boss, only spawns once all six Guardian bosses (Instructor Malicia, Doctor Theolen Krastinov, Lorekeeper Polkelt, The Ravenian, Lord Alexei Barov, Lady Illucia Barov) are dead. Unlike Sunken Temple's optional prophets, this isn't skippable if you want to reach the final boss.
Why is Doctor Theolen Krastinov (The Butcher) considered dangerous?
The Butcher's damage output escalates the longer the fight runs, making it a fight to end quickly rather than play safe and slow. A group that drags the fight out can find his damage has scaled up to a genuinely dangerous level.
