The Stockade Hardcore Guide

Level 22-30 · Stormwind City · Alliance

By Marc · Updated July 27, 2026

Dextren Ward, the final boss of The Stockade

What to expect

The Stockade is the prison beneath Stormwind City itself, making it one of the most convenient dungeons in the game to reach. No travel required for Alliance characters already in the capital. It's short and linear, but the prisoners held in individual cell blocks are frequently grouped, and opening the wrong cell without a plan is the dungeon's defining risk.

Before you queue

Not every Stockade quest is available right at the entrance. Part of the chain requires An Unsent Letter, looted from Edwin VanCleef in The Deadmines, which routes to Baros Alexston at Cathedral Square and then Warden Thelwater elsewhere in the city. Check the full chain before assuming you're ready, rather than only grabbing what's offered near the entrance.

The bosses

Targorr the Dread & Kam Deepfury

Both are held in cells alongside other prisoners. Check what's in a cell before opening it rather than assuming a single target is waiting inside.

Hamhock & Bazil Thredd

Standard fights for the bracket, but positioned close enough to other cell blocks that a loud fight can draw attention from adjacent prisoners if your group lingers too long.

Dextren Ward & Bazil Thredd

Both are late, significant fights rather than a single clean "final boss". Bazil Thredd is also a specific quest target (his head is a turn-in item), so don't skip him assuming Ward is the only one that matters. Both are straightforward tank-and-spank fights, but make sure the surrounding cell area is cleared first in each case. Nearby prisoners can complicate the pull if left unaddressed.

What matters most here

  • Never open a cell blind. Look at what's inside first, since several release multiple prisoners at once rather than a single target.
  • The dungeon's compact layout means fights can be heard or noticed from nearby cells. Don't let a long fight run unnecessarily close to an unopened block.
  • Because the entrance is inside Stormwind itself, there's zero travel risk getting there. Don't let that convenience make the group careless about pacing once inside.

Wrapping up

The Stockade is short, convenient, and low-risk if you check each cell before opening it. The main danger is entirely self-inflicted. Opening a multi-prisoner cell without checking first is the most common way groups get overwhelmed here.

Frequently asked questions

What level should I be for The Stockade in Hardcore?

The Stockade is tuned for levels 22-30. It's an Alliance-only dungeon located inside Stormwind City itself, in the prison beneath the Stormwind Stockade.

Why is The Stockade considered risky in Hardcore?

The prison cells hold groups of criminal NPCs rather than isolated single enemies, and several cells release multiple prisoners at once when opened. Opening a cell without a plan can turn one intended pull into three or four attackers.

Do I need to complete quests before entering The Stockade?

Not entirely. Part of the chain requires An Unsent Letter, looted from Edwin VanCleef in The Deadmines, which then routes you through Baros Alexston at Cathedral Square and Warden Thelwater elsewhere in Stormwind before you're fully set up. Check the quest chain in advance rather than assuming everything is available right at the entrance.
