WoW Forever Leveling Guide: Every XP Bonus, Camping and Dungeon Quests

How to level fast in WoW Forever: the 5% XP from cooked food, the Cozy Sleeping Bag, rested experience from camp tents, the Legacy perks that help, and why dungeon quests now carry the experience, with the XP per dungeon.

Leveling in WoW Forever is the 1 to 60 you know, with a few new ways to make it faster. Cooked food now gives experience, a sleeping bag gives more, camps top up your rested experience, and dungeons pay out through their quests rather than their monsters. None of it is hard to use, and together it adds up to a noticeably quicker climb.

The figures are from the beta, which went to level 30. If Blizzard changes them at launch, this page follows.

Every experience bonus at a glance

BonusWhat it givesHow longHow to get it
Well fed (any cooked buff food)5% more experience from kills15 minutesCook it, or buy it from a cook
Cozy Sleeping Bag1% after a minute of rest, 3% after three2 hoursA quest chain from level 14
Rested experienceDouble experience from kills until it runs outUntil usedLog out in an inn or a city, or sit by a Camp Tent
Dungeon questsAbout 2.2 times what they gave in Classic–Pick them up before you go in

They stack: a well-fed character with the sleeping bag’s 3% and rested experience gets all three on every kill. Food and rested experience count only for kills; quests give the same either way.

Cooking: 5% more experience from every meal

In WoW Forever every cooked dish that makes you well fed also adds, in its own words, “experience gained from kills is increased by 5%” for the 15 minutes the buff lasts. That goes for the plainest food in the game: Herb Baked Egg and Spiced Wolf Meat, which every cook learns from the trainer, work as well as a high-level feast. So Cooking is worth leveling on every character, even one that never cooks anything else.

  • Eat before you pull. Eating takes ten seconds of sitting to make you well fed; do it while you drink and rest anyway.
  • Kills only. Quest experience isn’t raised, so the buff matters most when you grind or clear a camp for a quest.
  • Make it last. The Legacy perk Gourmand makes food buffs last longer.

Every cooking recipe, the new ones included, is in the WoW Forever professions helper.

The Cozy Sleeping Bag

The Cozy Sleeping Bag, from Season of Discovery, is back. Put it down anywhere and rest in it: after one minute you gain 1% more experience, after three minutes 3%, and the bonus lasts two hours. It’s the cheapest bonus in the game, so lie down every time you stop to sort your bags or wait for a group.

You get it from a quest chain that opens at level 14 for both factions. There’s no quest giver: you click objects hidden across both continents. The Alliance starts at the burned remains in the field of Alexston Farmstead in Westfall (37.4, 50.6) and finishes in the Barrens; the Horde does it the other way round, starting by the burned-out tower on the Field of Giants in the Barrens (46.4, 73.9). On the way you pass Webwinder Path in Stonetalon Mountains, the Stonewrought Dam in Loch Modan and Thoradin’s Wall in the Hillsbrad Foothills, and pick up two 12-slot bags and a choice of ranged weapon.

Careful on the way

The chain takes you near the other faction’s guards: Alliance players pass close to Sun Rock Retreat, a Horde town in Stonetalon, and Horde players have to reach the Stonewrought Dam, which the Alliance guards.

Camping and rested experience

Camps are WoW Forever’s new way to rest away from town. A cook places a campfire (the Basic Campfire Kit, from a Simple Wood with Flint and Tinder in your bags); it burns for 15 minutes. Other players put objects from their professions around it, and anyone who sits or crafts by the fire for a minute gets the buffs of every object there, for an hour. Around level 5, the quest The Great Outdoors starts you off.

For experience, one object matters most: the leatherworker’s Camp Tent. Thirty seconds by it raises your rested experience to 5% of a level, once an hour; it does nothing if you already have more. Rested experience doubles what kills give until it runs out, so a tent at every stop keeps that going between inns. Everything else about camps is in our camping guide.

Dungeons: the experience is in the quests

WoW Forever moved dungeon experience from the monsters to the quests. Kills inside give little; Blizzard raised that by 20% during the beta and fixed a bug that gave everyone in a group the experience of its highest-level player, so it now depends on your own level. The quests are where it is: a dungeon quest pays about 2.2 times what it gave in Classic (more than three times until Blizzard halved the extra on October 1), and a dungeon’s quests together are often worth a level or more.

The experience of all of a dungeon’s quests for each faction, as they were in the beta (to level 30). The catch: many are given far from the dungeon, in a capital or at the other end of the zone, and some need a quest before them. Collect them first; our dungeon guides list every quest per faction, and the dungeon list by level shows where each dungeon fits.

Legacy perks that help you level

Legacy, WoW Forever’s account-wide progression, has a few perks that make every character after your first level faster. These are the ones that matter for leveling; how to earn the points is in our Legacy system guide.

Well Rested

Rested experience builds up 4% faster per rank, and your rested cap is 4% higher per rank.

Talented

Talent points up to five levels earlier, so your build comes together sooner.

Thrill of Adventure

A little health and mana back after every kill that isn’t trivial: less time eating and drinking.

Gourmand

Food buffs last longer, the 5% experience of well-fed food included.

Permanence

Party, raid and camp buffs last longer.

Frequent Flier

Cheaper and faster flights.

Where to level

Every starting zone has a guide with all of its quests on the map, the ones new in Forever marked: Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Teldrassil, Durotar, Tirisfal Glades, Mulgore and, for the Skyborne, Zephras Isle. Later on, the new Riverglades covers much of the mid-30s to mid-40s with over 150 quests; it and the other new zones are in our new zones guide.

Leveling on Hardcore

Every bonus on this page is about speed, and none of them is worth a risk. The good news is that most of them fit Hardcore play anyway: eating and resting are the safe downtime you’d take between pulls regardless, and a camp is a place to recover away from town.

  • Rest where nothing walks. The sleeping bag and the camp buffs need you to sit still for a minute or three: do it away from patrols and respawns.
  • Group for the quests, not the kills. A dungeon is worth it for its quests; don’t run it again and again for the kill experience, which is low.
  • Mind the sleeping bag route. Its chain passes enemy guards; go when you can handle a mistake, not at level 14 on a PvP realm.

More on staying alive in WoW Forever is in our Hardcore guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does food give experience in WoW Forever?

Yes. Every cooked dish that makes you well fed also gives 5% more experience from kills while the buff lasts, 15 minutes. It doesn’t count for quest experience. The Legacy perk Gourmand makes food buffs last longer.

What does the Cozy Sleeping Bag do in WoW Forever?

Rest in it and you gain 1% more experience after a minute, up to 3% after three minutes, for two hours. You get it from a quest chain that opens at level 14, for Alliance and Horde, which also rewards two 12-slot bags and a ranged weapon.

Are dungeons good experience in WoW Forever?

For their quests, yes; for their monsters, not much. Dungeon quests pay about 2.2 times what they did in Classic, and a dungeon’s quests together are often worth a level or more. Experience from dungeon kills is low, though Blizzard raised it by 20% during the beta.

How do you get rested experience faster in WoW Forever?

Log out in an inn or a city as in Classic, sit by a leatherworker’s Camp Tent (it tops your rested experience up to 5% of a level, once an hour), and take the Legacy perk Well Rested.
