Zul'Farrak Hardcore Guide

Level 44-54 · Tanaris · Both factions

Chief Ukorz Sandscalp, the final boss of Zul'Farrak

Overview

Zul'Farrak is a sprawling, sun-scorched Sandfury troll city with more open outdoor-style layout than most dungeons in its bracket. It's known for a distinctive running gauntlet event partway through, which is the dungeon's defining Hardcore-relevant risk — a fast-paced, high-density fight that punishes groups without a clear plan far more than any single boss does.

Quest prep checklist

Zul'Farrak quests come from Tanaris quest hubs on both factions — check them before entering. If you want the optional Gahz'rilla fight, make sure you have the Mallet of Zul'Farrak quest item beforehand, since it isn't found inside the dungeon itself.

Boss-by-boss hazards

Antu'sul & Witch Doctor Zum'rah

Zum'rah is a caster capable of healing himself and applying curses — interrupt where possible rather than letting him sustain through a long fight.

The gauntlet event

Freeing a captive troll NPC partway through the dungeon triggers a running event where your group escorts them along a set path while waves of Sandfury trolls attack. This is fast, chaotic, and unlike anything else in the dungeon — know the path and agree on a plan (who tanks, who focuses adds, whether to fight or run certain sections) before triggering it.

Gahz'rilla (optional)

Summoned only if your group has the Mallet of Zul'Farrak. A hard-hitting optional fight — treat it as a deliberate choice to take on extra risk, not something to stumble into without preparation.

Chief Ukorz Sandscalp (final boss)

A relatively standard final fight once you've survived the gauntlet — the harder part of the dungeon is generally behind you by this point, so don't let the group get complacent on the approach.

Hardcore-specific tips

  • The gauntlet event is the dungeon's single biggest risk — go in with a plan for tanking, add management, and positioning rather than improvising during the event itself.
  • Only pursue the optional Gahz'rilla fight if your group is fully prepared for extra risk — it's entirely skippable if you don't have the mallet or don't want it.
  • The open, sprawling layout makes it easier to accidentally pull extra trolls from a distance — watch pull ranges more carefully than in a tighter, more linear dungeon.

Summary

Zul'Farrak's difficulty is concentrated almost entirely in its gauntlet event — plan for it specifically, and the rest of the dungeon is a manageable, if visually distinctive, outdoor-style crawl in the mid-to-upper forties range.
